THE BOSTON GLOBE HISTORIC WALKS IN OLD BOSTON, 4th Edition
Published in Paperback by Globe Pequot Pr (01 June, 2000)
Authors: John Harris, Erica Bollerud, and Charlotte Harris
Average review score:

Fascinating history!
This book is wonderful in every respect! There is a great deal of history provided in the book, and practically walks the reader through the historical town of Boston feeling as if they were re-living the experiences of the individuals written of in the book (i.e. George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Paul Revere, John Hancock). Also the reader absorbs the culture and environment of historical Boston by envisioning the architecture and designs of the houses, meeting places, state buildings and so forth.

A thoroughly written book, with a knack for meticulous details, is one highly recommended for history buffs and loyal Bostonians.

Boston Neighborhoods : A Food Lover's Walking, Eating, and Shopping Guide to Ethnic Enclaves in and around Boston
Published in Paperback by Globe Pequot Pr (May, 2001)
Author: Lynda Morgenroth
Average review score:

For the true urban explorer
Ms. Morgenroth has truly explored the Boston area to offer this cornucopia of choices of restaurants, markets, and shops in ethnic areas of the city and its surrounding areas. She explores such diverse areas as the North End and Coolidge Corner and even makes forays to lesser-known places such as Watertown's Little Armenia and East Cambridge. A must for the urban walking tour enthusiast or anyone who enjoys ethnic food and experiencing the beautiful city of Boston. The only guide to the city that truly takes one beyond the historic sites, museums, and affluent districts to unveil the true city. Highly recommended for the "off the beaten path" traveller or the Bostonian who wishes to discover more of their city.

The Brookfields, by Dennis LeBleau
This book tells much about the Brookfields of Massachusetts, in Worcester County. It focuses on all the Brookfields including North Brookfield, East Brookfield, West Brookfield, and Brookfield. Showing many pictures, and captions on each town. Since I live in one of the Brookfields, I must say that this is a very interesting picture book to see. Tells, history, and other facts. Well worth.

Building the Maine Guide Canoe
Published in Paperback by The Lyons Press (January, 2003)
Author: Jerry Stelmok
Average review score:

Great book for those interested in how canoes are made
I read the book because I wanted to know how wood and canvas canoes are made. This was the book recommended by a friend that has four wood and canvas canoes. I found it to be a straight forward book on how to make a canoe starting from selecting the wood, to stretching on the canvas. Every step was explained as if your father was teaching you the family business.

Bundling: Its Origin, Progress and Decline in America
Published in Hardcover by Omnigraphics, Inc. (January, 1992)
Author: Henry Reed Stiles
Average review score:

Hey Amazon! Fix your typo!
This title should read "Bundling: Its Origins, Progress, & Decline in America". The use of "Its" (without the apostrophe) is correct here, since what is needed is the possessive form of the pronoun "It", NOT the contraction for "It is".

Hey, Amazon! Fix it: it makes you look stupid.

By Nature and by Custom Cursed: Transatlantic Civil Discourse and New England Cultural Production, 1620-1660 (Civil Society Series)
Published in Hardcover by Tufts Univ (May, 1999)
Author: Phillip H. Round
Average review score:

Compelling and Engagingly Written
Pulling from many different disciplines and media (town records, letters, published literature, etc.), Phil Round examines the many different discourses that were swirling around New England when our American mindset started to coalesce. He finds that Puritanism, while a large part of our heritage, was not the only way of thinking present in the 17th century--we were much more varied and secular than is genererally represented in history.

Phil Round is an exceptional lecturer--funny and engaging as well as critically sound. His book very much mirrors his fine lectures.

Highly recommended. Would pair nicely with Philip Fisher's Still the New World for an American lit and culture syllabus.

the most thorough and honest guide to the region
As the author of this guide, I am partial to thinking IT IS THE BEST guide to Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket. I will be researching the region from June through August 1998 and would appreciate any comments or suggestions for the next edition. If your suggestion/s is/are used, the publisher will send you a free copy of the third edition.

Cape Cod Table
Published in Hardcover by Chronicle Books (June, 2003)
Authors: Lora Brody and Susie Cushner
Average review score:

A celebration of seafood
A book for those who like to cook, Brody's latest, organized by course, features lots of seafood. There are traditional dishes from chowders (without thickener!) to Bacalhou (Portuguese Salt Cod) to instructions for a real on-the-beach Clambake, as well as an indoor version. The gorgeous color photos are still-lifes with food, or neighborhood scenes or boats. There are Mussels Steamed with Wine and Garlic, Bonfire Mussels and Grilled Mussels, Steamed Clams and Fried Clams and Baked Stuffed Clams and Clam Fritters as well as White Clam Pizza and Spaghetti with White Clam Sauce.

There's a chapter on breakfast which features one of the few restaurant recipes, Cottage Street Bakery Dirt Bombs, luscious heavy donut-like balls, as well as Oatmeal Brulée, and Strawberries and Cream French Toast. Appetizers range from Classic Deviled Eggs to Boiled shrimp to Smoked Salmon Cheesecake. Among the soups are Oyster Stew and Bread Bowl Salmon Chowder. Mac's Calamari Salad comes from Mac's Seafood in Wellfleet and Sunset Slaw features beets, red cabbage and pickled cocktail onions.

Main courses range from New England Boiled Dinner, made with Stout, to Cranberry Orange Turkey Breast, Grilled Bluefish with Mustard and Lime, Sea Bass Poached in Ginger Fish Broth with Cilantro Pesto, Baked Stuffed Lobster (Ritz crackers and Maine crabmeat), and Grilled Sea Scallops (kabobs). Desserts range from kid-oriented (Chocolate-Covered Cape Cod Potato Chips, Mint Chip Brownie Ice Cream Sundae) to the Lavender Crème Brulee from Provincetown's Chester Restaurant, and Cranberry-Pear Linzertorte. Final chapters include drinks (Chatham's Candy Manor Hot Chocolate, Cranberry Martini) and condiments (Fish Stock, Beach Plum Jam, Pumpkin Cranberry Chutney).

Brody, the author of 22 cookbooks, lives on the Cape half the year and imparts a lot of Cape atmosphere and enthusiasm with the recipes. Recipe notes include background, cooking tips and variations (including a comprehensive lobster how-to). The lay-out is attractive and easy to read and the photographs are luscious. Brody has another winner.
